Cohda Wireless was founded in 2004 by a group of highly regarded research scientists working at the University of South Australia's Institute for Telecommunications Research. Cohda's world-class team of scientists and engineers has progressed though the completion of prototype Cooperative-ITS systems, to designing and selling real world products with a compelling advantage. Cohda Wireless has secured revenues in the emerging Cooperative-ITS market through the sales of five generations of its on-board and road-side equipment.

Dr. Chris Beare, Independent Chair

Chris has had careers in engineering, strategy, venture capital and investment banking. He was the join CEO of Hambros Australia merchant bank in the 1990s and the Chairman and CEO of start up company Radiata, which became part of Cisco in 2001. Chris sat on commercialisation committees with CSIRO and NICTA and remains involved with many early stage technology companies. He is also Chairman of DEXUS Property Group (ASX 50) and Saluda Medical.

Dr. Greg Smith

Greg is a co-founder of the venture capital company, SciVentures Investments Pty. Ltd., which manages the SciVentures Pre-Seed Fund. He returned to Australia in 1999, after 17 years as a senior executive with three Dow-Jones listed corporations in USA and Europe, where he predominantly worked on the identification and development of high technology business opportunities from research outcomes. He is the chairman (or a director) of the boards of four SciVentures start-up companies.

Ron Cattell

Ron has lived and worked in eight different countries around the globe. He was one of the founders of Datacraft Asia, growing the company to Revenues of US$600m and was CEO of the Group from 1999 to 2004. He has 16 years of public company board experience. He is an investor, director and advisor to several companies, mainly in the technology space.  He represents Epicorp on the Cohda Board and is also a member of the Mooroolbark Group.

Wayne Fitzsimmons

Wayne is an experienced executive who has worked extensively in the US, UK and in his home country of Australia. He is a director of several small privately owned start-up and hi-tech companies in Australia including Inlink Media, QSR International, NGA.NET and Space Time Research.

Torsten Lehmann, Director, NXP Semiconductors

Torsten is Senior Vice President and General Manager, Business Line Car Entertainment, at NXP Semiconductors - a global semiconductor company with operations in more than 25 countries. NXP posted a revenue of $4.36 billion in 2012. Torsten has a proven track record in the Automotive Semiconductor and Component Business, having had experience across a number of market segments during his 14-year career in the industry.

Bruce Tilbrook, Director, UniSA Ventures

Bruce is the Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary of UniSA Ventures who managed the original spin-out, and seed investment, of Cohda Wireless from the University of South Australia. He has over 20 years experience in senior commercial management, mergers & acquisition and corporate governance areas.   

 

Bruce represents UniSA Ventures in its capacity as a shareholder in a number of its investee companies. He also manages the Catalyst Investment Fund which provides early-stage proof of concept or prototype development funding to accelerate commercial outcomes.


Malcolm Thornton, Board Observer, Cisco

Malcolm leads the development and execution of strategy for investments and acquisitions in Australia and New Zealand while supporting the broader APJ team across the region. Malcolm has extensive experience in the venture capital world both as investor and entrepreneur. He spent over a decade on the investment team at Starfish Ventures, one of Australia’s leading venture firms and had his first investment role with JAFCO Asia representing their investment activities in Australia. He also spent several years in the US with the start up Platypus Technology.

Malcolm earned a Masters of Applied Science from the Queensland University of Technology and an MBA from the University of Melbourne. Malcolm was a Monbusho scholar in Japan and served for many years on the board of AVCAL, the Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Ltd.

Dr. Paul Alexander

Chief Technology Officer

Professor Paul Alexander is a pioneer in the field of iterative detection, having done some of the original ground-breaking research in this field as far back as the mid-1990s. He has since had an impressive career in turning this research into products in Australia, Singapore, and the USA. At Southern Poro Communications, Paul was the principal designer of advanced 3G receivers. Paul co-founded Cohda Wireless Pty Ltd to capitalize on a range of new techniques that he (and others) had developed while at the University of South Australia. Since then, Paul has led the creation of all of Cohda’s IP and has built an impressive patent portfolio. Paul continues to create innovative IP today.

Prof. Alex Grant

Technical & Research Advisor

Alex Grant is the Director of the Institute for Telecommunications Research at the University of South Australia. He has lead the Coding and Information Theory group since 1998. He is an internationally recognised researcher in advanced signal processing and information theory. Prof. Grant has been technically responsible for government and industry funded research projects worth over $2M since 1998 and has published over 100 technical papers. He is the youngest ever professorial appointment at the University of South Australia.

Prof. Lars Rasmussen

Technical & Research Advisor

Lars Rasmussen is a Research Professor of Telecommunications at the Institute for Telecommunications Research at the University of South Australia where he has been the leader of the Communications Signal Processing group since his arrival in February 2002. He also holds a part-time appointment at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, where he is the leader of the Coding and Communications Networks group. Prof. Rasmussen is an internationally recognized researcher in advanced signal processing and communications theory. Since 1993, he has been leading commercial and academic projects in the area of wireless communications in Australia, Singapore and Sweden. He has published more than 100 technical papers.

Dr Paul Gray

Chief Executive Officer

Paul has considerable experience in creating value from new communications technologies.  Prior to joining Cohda Wireless, he worked for six years in San Diego where he was CTO for iCODING, a start-up focused on developing and licensing IP for Turbo-codes, before joining TrellisWare, where he led the development of a novel 1 Gbps Turbo-code chip and was Business Manager for TrellisWare’s Commercial activities.  Prior to this, Paul had worked for Dspace where he worked on satellite communications products and was responsible for the development of products that were the first commercial application of the (then recently invented) Turbo Codes.

Fabien Cure

Chief Engineer

Fabien's background is in short range wireless IC.  He worked in a leading wireless IC supplier for the car industry in UK, CSR Ltd.  He developed the long-term roadmap for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for the car market as well as supports one of the top three car makers for their 2008 to 2015 platforms. During this period he also managed key SW projects in UK, India and China for leaders in the PND and aftermarket infotainment markets. Prior to that Fabien worked in a French technical distributor as wireless product line manager.  Fabien is now manaing the development department of Cohda Wireless to bring the company to the next level, reaching mass production with a tier one car maker in the next four years.

Bernd Luebben

Vice President of Business Development

Bernd brings over 22 years of Automotive and Semiconductor experience. Prior to joining Cohda Wireless, he worked for Semiconductor Manufacturers like Motorola SPS (known as Freescale Semiconductor) where he held several Senior positions in Sales & Marketing, and Texas Instruments where he led the European Automotive Sales & Application team. In Switzerland Bernd worked for Volcano Communication Technologies (now part of Mentor Graphics) as VP of Sales & Marketing where he developed and executed global strategies in the areas of design software for communication networks, embedded software, and test & validation tools for Automotive. In 2005 Bernd led the European Sales activities of Motorola Automotive (now part of Continental).
